Piako 50th

Mini Rally
Labour Day Weekend 2007
20, 21, 22 October

Host: Piako Gliding Club

The 50th Anniversary of any gliding club is of course a vintage event, what ever the club concerned may think, so Vintage Kiwi were pleased to be invited to hold a Mini Rally as part of the Piako GC’s celebrations over the 2007 Labour Day Weekend.

I [Ian Dunkley] do not usually give a list as when I once forgot someone, their wife, on reading the report, accused her husband of an alternative weekend activity, causing quite a bit of grief. So if I have made the mistake again please ask your wife to contact me direct!

VK's Swallow which last year we had hoped would be flying at the event attended in its box, ready for display at Classic Flyers Museum, following the decision that flying renovation was not economic. Our new Skylark 3f, complete with C of A, was at Drury but let down, in more ways than one, by its box whose health prevented the road trip to Matamata.

VK Rally at Matamata

The Piako Gliding Club is 50 years old this year.

Yep the big 50.

Vintage Kiwi has been invited to be part of their celebrations by holding this years Vintage Kiwi at Matamata over the Labour weekend for a change.

Dates are October 20th 21st and 22nd.

There will be a combined dinner on the Sunday night at the Matamata Club [not the airfield ] Waharoa Rd Matamata.  Pre-registration is required for the dinner.

As guest of honour there will be a KA4 masquerading as ZK-GBO Piakos first ever glider, [2 seater trainer] and fondly know as Piakos *little stinker*. This a/c is owned by John Schicker – Taranaki who will trailer it up especially for the party It will certainly be available to fly so you can try out first hand what it was like to fly these machines of 50 years ago.

Hopefully there will be a Tiger Moth or two attending, which will be used to aero tow BO and some of the Vintage and Classic gliders that will also be in attendance and joining in the festivities. There should be lots of flying available.

There will also be a Piako *Hall of Memories* in the clubhouse, including photos, general memorabilia, plus continuous cds or videos, showing a lot of past history that has been gathered together especially for this birthday celebration

Book this in for Labour weekend and please join the Piako club in celebrating this very historic milestone in their clubs history.

The weather has already been ordered, so it really will be a fabulous weekend of history, activity, flying and entertainment.
