What is a Vintage or Classical Glider? The European definition is not
appropriate for New Zealand, simply because we don’t have many vintage
gliders left. Instead we will cheat and “Vintage” will be classed as
anything built of wood or tubular steel, fabric or wood covered, whilst
“Classic” will be glass produced prior to 1975, this date being reviewed
every five years. And metal?... we'll fit it in somewhere!... FlyingAs all flying members will already be members of Gliding New Zealand, all flying activities will be under the direct control of the host gliding club. This facilitates a single membership fee for all classes of member types, and of course recognises the reality of GNZ flying authority. Rallies will be a main activity. There will be two annual national
rallies based on two sites, for VK North it usually is Taupo and VK
South gathers at Nelson Lakes. Throughout the year there will be mini-rallies organised by
local clubs or local VK members. To generate interest amongst the general gliding fraternity, we will be looking into an annual decentralised competition running throughout the year. This is intended to show what “old” gliders can do with good pilots. ModellersScale Modelling & Museums Internationally modellers are active members of vintage organisations showing, along with museums, gliders that are no longer flying, as well as examples of others. The NZ Model Aeronautics Assn is already a Vintage Kiwi member and ways of developing co-operation are to be investigated. The incorporation of a Scale Section at next years Vintage Kiwi Rallies is just one example. NewsletterNewsletter, Promotion & Publicity magazine “Vintage Kiwi News”, renamed simply "Vintage Kiwi" in 2008, will be produced at least three times per year, containing national and international news, restoration progress reports, and articles of interest to all types of membership. PublicityWe have already had excellent publicity within the gliding press internationally, and this will continue. Further articles will be appearing both in the NZ and international press and on the web, see www.glidingmagazine.co.uk, under features, for example. Vintage Kiwi's own web site will continue to be developed to provide more vintage information and news for members, thanks to web hosting by Gliding New Zealand. |
